Marshall Berman’s take on modernity is presented in his book All That Is Solid Melts into Air whereby he focuses on its issues and the cultural attitudes and philosophies towards the modern condition. In doing so he shares his experiences of modernity post WWII in New York in the height of an economic boom and then more specifically of his childhood neighbourhood, the Bronx. In addition to expanded austerity, industrial and architectural development, the end of WWII proved to be a key period in world history and by extension the history of art. A talented group of artists emerged in result that had been influenced by an influx of established European artist who had fled to New York to escape fascist regimes in their homelands. More importantly these artists produced art that was at the heart of maelstrom Berman describes in regards to his experience of modernity. I aim to highlight the correlation between Berman’s experience of modernity and the emergence of a new Ameri can modernism. Modernity throughout this period was broken into two different compartments, hermetically sealed off from one another: modernisation in economics and politics, modernism in art, culture and sensibility. It’s through the lens of this dualism in which we recognise that both Berman and these artists try to make sense of the world around them by making their individual expressions that would re-conceptualise what it is to be modern in the twentieth century. The purpose of education is to further one s knowledge by building off the knowledge that they already have. But teaching those said students to further their knowledge is not always as plain and simple as it seems. When the question comes up as to if teaching is an art or a science, I would argue that teaching is both an art and a science. As Snowman and McCown stated, while research shows us what has worked under certain conditions, does not mean that it will work when used in other conditions because they vary from school to school and class to class, as well as, change over time (Snowman McCown, 2015, p. 15). Feral hogs have recently become a problem in middle Tennessee. Although these animals are not native to this area, it is believed that the hogs were brought in illegally for sport hunting. Although this move was ill advised, the wild hogs were trapped and brought into North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. With the illegal transportation to Tennessee, and migration east, the animals have become a nuisance quickly. A female pig can reproduce twice a year with a litter of up to eight piglets each time. This can add up quickly since there are not many predators of wild hogs. Pigs are highly adaptable to most areas and can tolerate a wide range of climates. Wild hogs also eat mostly plants but will also eat insects, worms, bird eggs, small birds, and reptiles. Feral hogs reproduce rapidly, increasing their population dramatically and very quickly. The hogs not only cause damage to farms, they can also transmit diseases to livestock. Jason Garrett of the Overton County Cattleman’s Association says, â€Å"This is a serious threat to all of agriculture† (Garrett). If the wild hog population is not controlled, these animals can take a toll on farmland and also on revenues from crop and livestock production. Wild hogs can be an extreme nuisance to farmers. A total of $1. 5 billion lost annually because of wild hog damage plus the potential crippling effects that disease transmission could have on the livestock industry. They can damage cropland in various ways: eating crops, trampling crops, rooting in the farmland and damaging the plants roots. â€Å"They just tear up everything that they come to, and make trails across all the fields†¦ And just wander out in the corn stalks and maul down what they don’t eat†¦ just mow them down. said Overton County farmer, Freddie Paul (Paul). While making these trails, they also create ruts that can damage farm equipment and endanger the operator of the equipment. This can be not only dangerous but also costly to repair. The way the economy is presently, most farmers cannot afford to deal with costly or unexpected repairs. Wild hogs will also prey on livestock. This is another hit on a farmer’s checkbook. Cattle are the main i ncome for most livestock farmers in middle Tennessee. The diseases spread by theses hogs pose a serious threat to farmers income as well. As of July 31, 2011, the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) put an end to sport hunting of wild hogs and placed into effect some new hunting regulations to assist in population control of wild hogs. The TWRA has removed wild hogs from big game status and place them in a nuisance category. This implementation technically takes the sport out of wild hog hunting and turns it into eradication efforts. This will allow landowners to use more methods to trap and kill the hogs, methods such as using rifles during daylight hours and live traps with bait. Landowners are also allowed to shoot hogs at night, using bait all year, with no weapon restrictions. During an interview with TWRA Officer, Pete Geesling, he explained some of the new changes: Landowners, family members legally allowed to hunt the property without a license and up to 10 designees may assist in the control effort provided by the methods exemption. No more than 10 individuals may be used as designees annually. The exemption will allow shooting at night with the aid of artificial light, shooting over bait during big game season, or any other methods, approved by TWRA. Dogs may be used as part of the experimental management program in Overton, Fentress, Cumberland and Pickett counties, but no dogs may be used during November or December (Geesling). The TWRA has previously and continues to adjust hunting regulations to aid in eradication efforts. However, research has shown that until these eradication hunts become more evenly spread across the affected area, they may only multiply the problem. Overpopulation will exacerbate in regions, causing more damage, and the efforts to find new food sources will lead these hogs to new areas. The citizens and farmers of Tennessee, along with TWRA, must work to spread awareness to areas that are beginning to see this problem and try to eliminate it early. The heavily affected areas must continue an eradication effort until the wild hog population is reduced drastically, allowing farmers to reclaim their land. The United States military intelligence was at worst inadequate and not capable of predicting the attack and at best irresponsible for not making sure that information that could have saved the Pacific Fleet ever reached its military commanders. A nation cannot depend on the head of its government to coordinate all areas of political and military command. This must be undertaken by a number or responsible people with expertise in different areas. Military intelligence and command, diplomatic measures and legislation must all be coordinated in preparation for the possibility of conflict. In a way, her voice also reflects her own independence. The story is mainly broken up into three parts of her development. These three parts chronicle her change from childhood and her childish misconception of a true love until her eventual peace and self-understanding. The beginning of her development is her first marriage to Logan Killicks, and her eventual desertion of him to what she thinks of as a better life. During the exposition, we see her being used by her grandmother as another chance at raising a child. After the rape of Janie’s mother, Nanny had to have another chance to raise a child correctly. This is where Janie’s search for independence started. As a child, she knew nothing other than to do what her grandmother told her, as she had no idea of independence, and the thought never crossed her mind that Nanny did not know what was best for her. This continued in her marriage with Logan Killicks. When their relationship starts Janie thinks that she has found the kind of life she has always wanted. Her childish mind thought that marriage meant love, and that Logan would take good care of her. But soon Logan reveals his expectations of her, and that he wants her to be basically an unpaid worker. This is the first time when we see Janie’s independence flare. She does not want this kind of life for herself, and she immediately looks for a way out. The first opportunity that comes is a man called Joe Starks that seems like a good match for Janie. He promises her love and a comfortable life. After years of abuse and duress under Joe, she finally breaks and realizes that sometimes harsh things need to be said to achieve what is right. The last part of Janie’s development comes after Joe dies. Janie is rich and carefree. Tea Cake Woods is a tall enigmatic stranger that comes and transforms Janie’s life. He, unlike the others, recognizes a class in Janie that the others did not see present. He, unlike the others, has nothing to offer her but his love and promise to stay with her and take care of her. It is enough for Janie. Tea Cake opens a new door, where she does not need to be anything but herself. In this marriage, Janie finds the love she sought in other relationships. Tea Cake is a man who respects Janie as an intelligent, exciting companion. By the end of her time with Tea Cake, Janie has become a woman who has experienced much and suffered much. This need is rarely met, as teachers do not have the training that they need to ensure these lower functioning students are able to benefit from the instruction provided. Part of this issue is that students are coming from increasingly diverse backgrounds, in which the expectations of their parents and the normalcy within the community are at odds with the current schooling methods (Lapkoff &Li, 2007). These current schooling methods are ineffective to a large number of students, because of their diversity, ethnically, culturally and cognitively. These are the students that fall through the cracks, due to the standard approach to education. This, in turn, causes higher rates of drop outs, poorer performance on standardized testing and lower graduation rates. (Lipsky, 2005). The solution is differentiated instruction. According to Tomlinson (2004) differentiated instrcution is â€Å"ensuring what a student learns, how he/she learns it, and how the s tudent demonstrates what he/she has learned is a match for that student’s readiness level, interests and preferred mode of learning.† Literature Review This is particularly important in regards to students with cognitive disabilities. An educator that provides their students with a reduced emphasis on whole-class instruction and an increase in the use of peer-assisted learning, has been shown to heighten students learning abilities, whether considered gifted or not. There have been many studies that also verify the fact that differentiated instruction works much more efficiently than other forms of instruction, but show the reasons why this is not implemented in many schools. They are simply the demands of the teachers themselves to follow a set curriculum and learning sets within a given period of time, leaving many students behind.
